Do you have a cosmetic “worry” list? If so, you are not alone.
I encourage patients to share their biggest concerns during consultations. It helps to know what truly bothers each individual as I consider options that will help them reach their aesthetic goals.
Below are three of the most common worries shared by patients. Read ahead for answers to questions you might have as you consider cosmetic interventions.
Unwanted Hair on the Face and Body
Excess or unwanted hair is often a problem for both men and women. Some patients simply seek convenience and no longer want to shave under their arms. Some are tired of the endless “maintenance” around their bikini areas. But sometimes the problem is deeper and becomes a self-esteem issue. Women with hairy arms, faces and breasts may suffer embarrassment, just as men with hairy necks, backs and torsos may feel the same. There is no need to suffer in silence or continue to “pluck away” at hair that is doomed to grow back. Laser hair removal is the remedy. It can be life changing and is effective on nearly every part of the body. It’s safe, and it permanently reduces hair growth.
Lines, Furrow and Wrinkles
Some patients notice that their faces have aged and seem to be sagging. Cheeks are no longer full, and the jowl line is emphasized. Or they may look tired or “grumpy” and notice frown lines and furrows between the eyes and around the mouth. There are several solutions, depending on the facial features of each patient and the severity of the problem. While Botox and Xeomin correct worry lines and “relax” the face, dermal fillers infuse collagen and “plump” the face by adding volume to depleted areas. These corrections to the face (and neck) are subtle and effective. You will still look like “you—only more rested, relaxed and youthful.
Many patients are concerned that their skin has lost its glow. Instead of being supple and smooth, the skin appears dry, dull, or even “dirty.” A good skin care regimen and proper daily exfoliation may improve your appearance and is highly recommended. However, as we age our skin can benefit from cosmetic treatments to remove dead layers and let new skin emerge.
Dermaplaning involves scraping off dead skin cells and vellus hairs from the hairline to underneath the chin and jaw area. It is an exfoliating method administered with a numbing cream that rids your face of the surface layer of old skin. This minimizes pores, allows new skin to emerge, and prepares your face to better absorb beneficial skin care products. It can be administered several times over the span of weeks or months to refresh and rejuvenate the face. Faces look noticeably younger, simply because the old skin and “fuzz” is gone.
Chemical peels also lift dead, dry skin from the face and unclog pores. They come in mild to strong solutions (depending on your skin type and condition) and are administered with a numbing cream. The procedure targets photodamaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentary irregularities, age and liver spots, rough skin and scaly patches, acne, and acne scarring. A more youthful, noticeably glowing appearance is achieved.
